South Carolina State Athletics Director Charlene Johnson has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee, as announced by Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Media Relations Office.

Johnson will join a committee that will focus on developing policies and procedures that govern the administration of the NCAA Division I Football Championship. Her term on the committee began immediately and will run through September 1, 2015.

"I'm excited and pleased to have been asked to serve on the Division I Football Championship Committee," Johnson said. “It's a very important NCAA committee, the work will be challenging and I look forward to making a contribution."

Johnson has served as the AD for S.C. State for eight years; her career in athletics administration began back in 1983 when she became the first woman in school history to be named a full-time coach as head coach of the volleyball and tennis teams. She also served as an assistant coach for S.C. State’s women’s basketball team.

Johnson also made history in 2008 as the first woman to serve as Chairperson of the MEAC Directors of Athletics; a native of Allendale, S.C., Johnson earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from S.C. State and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1998.
