Born in Birmingham, Ala. in 1944. A former
instructor at the University of California in Los Angeles and vocal activist, Davis hit the
headlines after she was accused of planning an alleged kidnapping of three San Quentin prisoners and supplying the gun that killed four people during the incident. While incarcerated on charges of murder, kidnapping and conspiracy, Davis' case was taken up by supporters across the country. In 1972, after 18 months in jail, she was tried and acquitted of the crimes.
