U.S. Navy honors Cuba Gooding Jr., who stars in 'Men of Honor'
United States Navy officials and the creative team of the Twentieth Century Fox film, "Men of Honor," were at the Washington, D.C. Cineplex Odeon Wisconsin Avenue Cinema two weeks ago to screen the movie based on the story of Naval Deep Sea Diver Carl Brashear. Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding, Jr. portrays the naval hero."Men of Honor" set in the 1950s during segregation also stars Oscar winning-actor Robert DeNiro, whose character tries to undermine Brashear's career in the U.S. Navy. Michael Rappaport, who was recently seen in Spike Lee's "Bamboozled," is also in the film.In attendance with Mr. Gooding were U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen, Secretary of the Navy, who presented the actor with an award from the U.S. Navy, Richard Danzig, Film Director George Tillman, Jr., and members of the U.S. Navy.After the screening, a cocktail reception was held in the Palladian Room of the Omni Shoreham Hotel, Calvert St., N.W."Men of Honor" opens nationwide on Nov. 10.

Luther Vandrosswith BET Walk of Fame Award
His melodic tones have thrilled millions worldwide throughout his career. His awards are countless, as are his admirers across the music industry. Now, Luther Vandross has achieved the ultimate recognition by Black Entertainment Television (BET) - the bestowing of the BET Walk of Fame Award. He joins previous honorees Michael Jackson (1995), Whitney Houston (1996), Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds (1997), Boyz II Men (1998), and Diana Ross (1999) as recipients of the sixth annual honor from BET, which includes a commemorative metallic plaque permanently placed along a walkway at BET's Washington headquarters.Vandross was honored in a night of tribute and reflection on Oct. 14, which benefited the College Fund/UNCF (United Negro College Fund). Some of the featured artist who appeared at the 2000 induction included Patti Labelle, Chaka Kahn, Next, Tyrese, Ideal, Gerald Levert, and Chante Moore.
