Mississippi, as you may have guessed, has a couple of problems. None of the approaches used to date (this side maybe of Head Start) are making the inroads that are needed on the poverty which continues to exclude far too many from the benefits of America's great and growing wealth. This new Internet site is an attempt to see if we can come up with new approaches that are going to turn our state into a better place to work and live. With any luck (or at least this is what I think) we will avoid endless discussions of race and our troubled past (and present), adopting a 'color blind' approach to the issues and opportunities. That said, we must be aware of our special obligations to the black community, which means that while color blind on the one hand we better have some pretty firm rules of thumb (for instance 50% of all our efforts and funds) must be headed straight at the needs of the black community. Can we open up a discussion of these important issues and possible alternative approaches on your site? I think that we need help and much more input and participation from the black community.
